In pickleball rally scoring, the team that wins a rally gets the point — whether or not they served. Traditional side-out scoring awards points only to the serving team. That one difference changes game length, the score call, and how a comeback works.
What is rally scoring in pickleball
Every rally produces a point. In doubles under USA Pickleball's provisional rules, a team serves until it loses a rally, and the opponents then take both the point and the serve. There is no second server.
Total points equal total rallies. A rally-scored game to 15 ends in 15 to roughly 30 rallies; a side-out game to 11 can take 25 or 70.
How side-out scoring works
Side-out scoring is the original system and still the default for rec play, sanctioned events, and the pro tours. Only the serving side can score. When the server loses a rally in singles, or both partners have lost their serves in doubles, that's a side out: the serve changes hands and the score stays put.
Doubles has a wrinkle at the start: the first serving team gets only one server before the side out, which is why the opening call is "0-0-2" (many groups say "0-0-start"). After that both partners serve on every turn. Court position follows score parity under either system — a team's designated starting server takes the right/even court when that team's score is even, the left/odd court when it's odd. Everything else in the pickleball doubles rules, from the two-bounce rule to the kitchen, is identical.

Why rally scoring exists
Court time is the honest answer. A director scheduling hundreds of matches on fixed courts needs slots that hold, and a side-out game has no ceiling on rallies; broadcast windows have the same problem.
The objection is real too. Pickleball's two-bounce rule hands the receiving team the better ball: the returner drives or drops, and the serving team plays a third shot from the baseline. Side-out scoring absorbs that imbalance by refusing to pay the receiver. Rally scoring pays it, which is why critics say it makes the serve a liability.
Major League Pickleball shows the argument cutting both ways. Its 2026 doubles games use side-out scoring to 11, win by two — rally scoring was dropped there — while the DreamBreaker, the singles tiebreaker played when a match reaches 2-2, is still rally-scored to 21, win by two, with players rotating every four points.
Pickleball rally scoring rules under USA Pickleball
The USA Pickleball rally scoring system is provisional, not permanent. It was approved provisionally in 2024, entered the rulebook as an option for 2025, and stayed provisional for 2026, with a decision due in 2027 on whether to extend, adopt, or drop it.
What the 2026 rulebook allows:
- A point is scored by the singles player or doubles team that wins each rally (Rule 14.A.2).
- A tournament director may choose rally scoring, except in double-elimination doubles events, 2026 Golden Ticket events, and the 2026 USA Pickleball National Championship (Rule 15.C.2).
- Formats are one game, best 2-of-3, or best 3-of-5, to 11, 15, or 21 points, win by two.
- For inclement weather, a director may approve scoring to 7 with an end change at 4 — in a single-game match, or in the tiebreaker game of a multi-game match.
The headline change for 2026 was the removal of the "freeze." Under the 2025 rule, game point could only be scored while serving — sit on 14 in a game to 15, win a rally while receiving, and you got nothing. Either side can now score the game-winning point. The score call is what actually trips people up
Side-out scoring uses three numbers: serving team's score, receiving team's score, server number. "Four, six, two." Rally scoring in doubles uses two, because there's no second server to identify: "Four, six." Singles is two numbers under either system.
Some club and league formats keep two servers under rally scoring, so read the local sheet — the two-number call is the USA Pickleball version, not a universal law. Targets move too: a rally-scored 11 is over almost before it starts, and 15 is the more common swap. If the three-number call is still shaky, nail the basics of pickleball scoring first.
Choosing a system for your rec group
Rally scoring fits when the clock is the constraint: courts rotating on a timer, a wide skill spread where side-out stalemates strand everyone waiting, or newer players who find the three-number call harder than the sport itself.
Stay with side-out if anyone in the group plays sanctioned tournaments — it's the default there, and rally scoring isn't permitted in double-elimination doubles at all — or if your group likes the comeback structure that rewards earning the serve back.
